About The Event
Wonder of Women proudly presents WOW Gallery at Pacific Place Seattle. 'Dear Sista, I See You.' A Healing Art Exhibition created for racial healing, education, and inspiration featuring artist Hiawatha D.'s Iconic Black Women and Black Love Collections. You're invited to join us for a fabulous and safe opening!
The WOW ‘Dear Sista, I See You.’ art exhibition includes the ‘Iconic Black Women’ and ‘Black Love’ collections by Hiawatha D., in which each painting is displayed with a love letter. These deeply personal and poignant letters are powerful statements of truth and humanity, and they speak to all people across race, gender and class. In a room lined with Hiawatha’s regal paintings, Wonder of Women will lead virtual healing retreats for reflection and renewal. During the six month run, WOW Gallery will feature getaway retreats, healing circles, speaker series, and events that heal, educate, and inspire.
Hiawatha D. paints scenes that speak to the Black experience. His pieces, exhibited nationwide, boldly show Black people transcending historical, societal, racial, and economic challenges in America. Inspired by his wife, Veronica Very, and their nonprofit work through WOW, he recently painted his "Iconic Black Women” collection (iconicblackwomen.com). The collection includes 50 vibrant paintings of history-making Black women, from Sojourner Truth to Amanda Gorman. Hiawatha D.’s “Black Love” collection is, in his words, “an expression of brilliant, beautiful Black people succeeding in love and life. ”These historic bodies of work are a timely offering of the love and truth we need for our city to heal.
Wonder of Women's mission is to create sacred spaces for Black women and girls where they can heal through stories and art. WOW knows firsthand the trauma of systemic racism and the toll it takes on the Black family and the broader community. WOW believes that when one person begins racial healing, that person spreads it to others. And from person to person, story to story, circle to circle— communities heal. Such a space is essential for the well-being and livelihood of any community – and never more needed than now.
